Admission to the Program
Undergraduate admission to Norfolk State University qualifies any student to enroll in the B.A. in Drama & Theatre program.  Degree seeking candidates who would like to be considered for scholarship must interview and audition or submit a portfolio.  More information is available under the "Scholarship Opportunities" tab in the navigation menu on the left.


About the Curriculum
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama & Theatre requires 120 credit hours and designed to provide students with comprehensive training in drama and theatre. The curriculum offers two areas of emphasis in design & technology and performance.  These areas of emphases provide students with concentrated training in the area selected.

The program also offers 18 hours of unrestricted electives to permit the student to receive a true liberal arts education.  Students may also elect to use the 18 elective hours to satisfy the requirements of an available minor in another discipline. The curriculum can be reviewed below:

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

General Education Requirements comprise 40 of the degree program's required 120 semester hours and must be completed for all undergraduate degree programs at the University. These courses can be found in the current University Undergraduate Catalog.

DRAMA & THEATRE CORE REQUIREMENTS

Drama & Theatre Core Requirements comprise 38 of the degree program's required 120 semester hours and must be completed by all students in the B.A. in Drama & Theatre program.

  • Modern Dance
  • Jazz Dance 

EMPHASIS REQUIREMENTS

Emphasis Requirements comprise 21 of the degree program's required 120 semester hours. Students must choose one area of emphasis and complete its required courses.

  • Drawing
  • Stagecraft II
  • Lighting Design
  • Scenery Design
  • Costume Design
  • Sound Design

 

Performance Emphasis:

  • Shakespeare
  • Voice & Diction 
  • Theatre Movement
  • Intermediate Acting
  • Improvisation for the Theatre
  • Advanced Acting Theory
  • Shakespeare for the Stage    

DRAMA COURSE ELECTIVE

The Drama Course Elective comprises 3 of the degree program's required 120 semester hours. An Academic Advisor must approve the elective course taken in this section.

MINOR or UNRESTRICTED ELECTIVES

Unrestricted Electives comprise 18 of the degree program's required 120 semester hours. Students may use these electives to satisfy the requirements of an approved minor. Academic Advisor must approve all courses taken in this section.
